Without these basic conditions, the competitiveness of community-based tourism against other options is reduced.

Opportunities for Community-Based Tourism
Despite these challenges, community-based tourism in Costa Rica has enormous potential. The global trend towards authentic and sustainable experiences favors these types of initiatives, as travelers increasingly seek to connect with local culture and contribute positively to the communities they visit. Strategic alliances with the private sector and government institutions can help overcome some of these barriers. Technical training programs, access to microcredit, and support in digital promotion can enhance the development of these projects and facilitate their integration into the global tourism market.Moreover, technology is a key ally. Online booking platforms, social media, and digital marketing strategies allow communities to promote their experiences directly to travelers interested in this type of tourism. Digitalization can reduce dependence on intermediaries and increase the visibility of community offerings. Another positive factor is the ability of community-based tourism to diversify the country’s tourism offering. While traditional destinations like Manuel Antonio or La Fortuna receive large volumes of tourists, many rural communities offer unique experiences that can extend the average visitor’s stay and generate economic spillover in new areas.
Towards Stronger Community-Based Tourism
For community-based tourism in Costa Rica to reach its full potential, a comprehensive approach that combines education, financing, and innovative marketing strategies is necessary. It is vital that communities receive support in improving their business capabilities and in creating safe and high-quality experiences. The success of community-based tourism will not only benefit those directly involved in its operation but will also strengthen Costa Rica’s image as an authentic, sustainable destination aligned with the values of "Pura Vida."
